In 2021, the Australian fishing rod market increased by 61% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, shipments abroad of fishing rods and other line fishing tackle increased by 21% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a pronounced descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 79%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, fishing rod exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, total exports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +33.0% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 58%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
New Zealand (X tons), the United States (X tons) and New Caledonia (X tons) were the main destinations of fishing rod exports from Australia, together accounting for 45% of total exports. Portugal, South Africa, Papua New Guinea, Singapore, the UK, Fiji, French Polynesia, Norway, Japan and China lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 34%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +41.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, New Zealand ($X), the United States ($X) and New Caledonia ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for fishing rod exported from Australia worldwide, with a combined 47% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Portugal, South Africa, Papua New Guinea, the UK, French Polynesia, Singapore, Fiji, Norway, China and Japan, which together accounted for a further 33%.
Among the main countries of destination, China, with a CAGR of +45.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average fishing rod export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 2.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 31%. The export price peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was French Polynesia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Fiji (+14.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, purchases abroad of fishing rods and other line fishing tackle was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, showed a deep setback. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, fishing rod imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +66.3% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of fishing rod to Australia, accounting for a 54% share of total imports. Moreover, fishing rod imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Japan (X tons), sixfold. Malaysia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 8.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to -9.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Japan (+11.0% per year) and Malaysia (-2.6% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of fishing rods and other line fishing tackle to Australia, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China stood at +4.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Japan (+5.3% per year) and Malaysia (+3.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average fishing rod import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 6.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price enjoyed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 73%. The import price peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while the price for Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+18.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
