Overall, imports, however, showed a slight reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, flat-rolled steel products imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight decline. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
China (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Japan (X tons) were the main suppliers of flat-rolled steel products imports to Australia, with a combined 71% share of total imports. These countries were followed by South Korea, Taiwan (Chinese) and France, which together accounted for a further 27%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for France (with a CAGR of +714.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of flat-rolled products of iron or non-alloy steel to Australia, comprising 36% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 17% share.
