In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of groats and meal of cereals (excluding wheat), when their volume decreased by -15.1% to X tons. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 141% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then reduced markedly in the following year.
In value terms, non-wheat groats imports reduced to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a perceptible increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 99.9% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Brazil (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of non-wheat groats to Australia, accounting for a 54% share of total imports. Moreover, non-wheat groats imports from Brazil exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, New Zealand (X tons), fourfold. Italy (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Brazil stood at +78.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: New Zealand (+53.0% per year) and Italy (-9.6% per year).
In value terms, Brazil ($X) constituted the largest supplier of groats and meal of cereals (excluding wheat) to Australia, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by New Zealand ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Brazil stood at +92.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: New Zealand (+42.6% per year) and Italy (-10.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average non-wheat groats import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 5.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a mild setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average import price increased by 24%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per ton), while the price for Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
