In 2022, overseas shipments of heat exchange units decreased by -15.2% to X units for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 95%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units, and then fell sharply in the following year.
In value terms, heat exchange unit exports fell to $X in 2022. In general, total exports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +116.9% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 69%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then fell in the following year.
Exports by Country
The UK (X units) was the main destination for heat exchange unit exports from Australia, accounting for a 43% share of total exports. Moreover, heat exchange unit exports to the UK exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Singapore (X units), fourfold. New Zealand (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 8.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to the UK amounted to +55.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Singapore (+11.8% per year) and New Zealand (+1.7% per year).
In value terms, the UK ($X) remains the key foreign market for heat exchange units exports from Australia, comprising 43% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Singapore ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by New Zealand, with an 8.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to the UK totaled +24.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Singapore (+11.0% per year) and New Zealand (-0.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average heat exchange unit export price stood at $X per unit in 2022, growing by 9.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 23%. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Tanzania ($X per unit) and India ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to France ($X per unit) and New Zealand ($X per unit) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Saudi Arabia (+12.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Australia
In 2022, approx. X units of heat exchange units were imported into Australia; increasing by 20% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 129%. Imports peaked at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, heat exchange unit imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 111% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
China (X units), the United States (X units) and Malaysia (X units) were the main suppliers of heat exchange unit imports to Australia, together comprising 58% of total imports. Japan, Germany, Thailand, the UK, Italy, France, Mexico, Sweden, Turkey and Taiwan (Chinese) lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Turkey (with a CAGR of +20.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest heat exchange unit suppliers to Australia were China ($X), the United States ($X) and Malaysia ($X), with a combined 58% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Japan, Germany, Thailand, the UK, Italy, France, Mexico, Sweden, Turkey and Taiwan (Chinese), which together accounted for a further 32%.
Turkey, with a CAGR of +27.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average heat exchange unit import price amounted to $X per unit, approximately mirroring the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 44%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Mexico ($X per unit) and the United States ($X per unit), while the price for Malaysia ($X per unit) and Thailand ($X per unit) were amongst the lowest.
