The Australian market for horse, mule and donkey meat declined modestly to $X in 2022, falling by -1.7% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, showed a noticeable shrinkage. In value terms, horse, mule and donkey meat exports declined dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Japan (X tons) was the main destination for horse, mule and donkey meat exports from Australia, accounting for a 58% share of total exports. Moreover, horse, mule and donkey meat exports to Japan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Belgium (X tons), twofold.
