Vietnam (X tons) was the main destination for malt exports from Australia, with a 32% share of total exports. Moreover, malt exports to Vietnam exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Philippines (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Japan (X tons), with a 9.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Vietnam amounted to +12.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Philippines (+8.7% per year) and Japan (+1.2% per year).
In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the key foreign market for malt exports from Australia, comprising 33% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Philippines ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Vietnam stood at +10.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Philippines (+7.8% per year) and Thailand (-5.4% per year).

In 2022, the average malt export price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 7.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 9.4%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Philippines (-0.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Australia
For the fourth year in a row, Australia recorded growth in supplies from abroad of malt, which increased by 5.1% to X tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 24%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, malt imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports posted prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 40% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
Germany (X tons), New Zealand (X tons) and the UK (X tons) were the main suppliers of malt imports to Australia, together comprising 96% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Germany (with a CAGR of +14.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, the largest malt suppliers to Australia were Germany ($X), the UK ($X) and New Zealand ($X), together comprising 92% of total imports.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, malt import price increased by +46.8% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for New Zealand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
