In 2022, the Australian manuka market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, the total consumption indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -31.7% against 2018 indices. Manuka consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 22%. There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+10.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Australia
In 2022, approx. X tons of manuka were imported into Australia; stabilizing at 2021 figures. Overall, imports, however, posted a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 174% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, manuka imports rose sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 96% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of manuka to Australia, with a 49% share of total imports. Moreover, manuka imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, New Zealand (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Thailand (X tons), with a 16% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China stood at +12.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: New Zealand (+5.4% per year) and Thailand (+59.7% per year).
In value terms, New Zealand ($X) constituted the largest supplier of manuka to Australia, comprising 62% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 7.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from New Zealand stood at +9.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+12.8% per year) and Thailand (+67.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average manuka import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 15% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 60% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was New Zealand ($X per ton), while the price for Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+4.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
