Memories Market Size in Australia

After two years of decline, the Australian memories market increased by 10% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Memories consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, the amount of multichip integrated circuits: memories exported from Australia shrank sharply to X units, which is down by -26.3% on the previous year. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a moderate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 153%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, memories exports declined to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a noticeable expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 159%. The exports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Hong Kong SAR (X units) was the main destination for memories exports from Australia, accounting for a 41% share of total exports. Moreover, memories exports to Hong Kong SAR exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Singapore (X units), twofold. Malaysia (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 17% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Hong Kong SAR totaled +14.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Singapore (-5.1% per year) and Malaysia (+30.1% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for memories exported from Australia were Hong Kong SAR ($X), Singapore ($X) and Malaysia ($X), together accounting for 49% of total exports. These countries were followed by the United States, Thailand, China and New Zealand, which together accounted for a further 24%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Thailand, with a CAGR of +31.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average memories export price stood at $X per unit in 2021, jumping by 23% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a noticeable decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Hong Kong SAR ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+3.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2021, purchases abroad of multichip integrated circuits: memories decreased by -13.9% to X units, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports recorded a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 61% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, memories imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 53% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, China (X units) constituted the largest supplier of memories to Australia, with a 47% share of total imports. Moreover, memories imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Taiwan (Chinese) (X units), twofold. Singapore (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 8.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China amounted to +2.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Taiwan (Chinese) (-1.6% per year) and Singapore (-3.3% per year).

In value terms, Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), South Korea ($X) and China ($X) were the largest memories suppliers to Australia, with a combined 80% share of total imports. Malaysia, the Philippines, Mexico, Singapore and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 14%.

Among the main suppliers, Mexico, with a CAGR of +61.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average memories import price amounted to $X per unit, picking up by 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, memories import price increased by +70.6% against 2018 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
