In 2022, exports of non-electrical articles of graphite or other carbon from Australia fell rapidly to X tons, which is down by -33.7% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded pronounced growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 366% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, graphite non-electrical articles exports shrank markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a moderate increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 259% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.
Exports by Country
New Zealand (X tons), the United States (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons) were the main destinations of graphite non-electrical articles exports from Australia, together comprising 51% of total exports. The UK, Spain, New Caledonia, Thailand, Malaysia, China, Germany and Papua New Guinea lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 40%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for New Caledonia (with a CAGR of +75.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for graphite non-electrical articles exported from Australia were New Zealand ($X), the United States ($X) and the Philippines ($X), with a combined 50% share of total exports. The UK, Spain, New Caledonia, Thailand, Malaysia, China, Germany and Papua New Guinea lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 39%.
New Caledonia, with a CAGR of +79.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average graphite non-electrical articles export price amounted to $X per ton, almost unchanged from the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a perceptible increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the average export price increased by 143% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Papua New Guinea ($X per ton) and the UK ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to New Caledonia ($X per ton) and Germany ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (+16.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Australia
In 2022, approx. X tons of non-electrical articles of graphite or other carbon were imported into Australia; with an increase of 14% against 2021 figures. Overall, imports, however, showed a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 50%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, graphite non-electrical articles imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -14.7% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
