After three years of decline, the Australian passenger car market increased by 35% to $X in 2021. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, passenger car imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, Japan (X units) constituted the largest passenger car supplier to Australia, with a 41% share of total imports. Moreover, passenger car imports from Japan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Korea (X units), threefold.
