The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, consumption attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, approx. X units of passenger cars were exported from Australia; surging by 9.1% against 2020. In general, exports, however, recorded a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 42% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, passenger car exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a dramatic shrinkage. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
New Zealand (X units), Malaysia (X units) and China (X units) were the main destinations of passenger car exports from Australia, together comprising 56% of total exports. These countries were followed by the United States, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Papua New Guinea, Nigeria, Singapore, the UK, Fiji and New Caledonia, which together accounted for a further 27%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for New Caledonia (with a CAGR of +64.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, New Zealand ($X) remains the key foreign market for passenger cars exports from Australia, comprising 47% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with a 9.6% share of total exports. It was followed by Singapore, with a 6.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to New Zealand stood at -9.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malaysia (+11.4% per year) and Singapore (+18.4% per year).

In 2021, the average passenger car export price amounted to $X per unit, picking up by 6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 47% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to China ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+2.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

After three years of decline, supplies from abroad of passenger cars increased by 21% to X units in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, passenger car imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Japan (X units) constituted the largest passenger car supplier to Australia, with a 41% share of total imports. Moreover, passenger car imports from Japan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Korea (X units), threefold. China (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Japan totaled -1.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Korea (-0.2% per year) and China (+12.7% per year).
In value terms, Japan ($X) constituted the largest supplier of passenger cars to Australia, comprising 40% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Korea ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with an 8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Japan was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Korea (+1.2% per year) and China (+38.6% per year).

In 2021, the average passenger car import price amounted to $X per unit, with an increase of 13% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
