Petroleum Bitumen Market Size in Australia

After two years of growth, the Australian petroleum bitumen market decreased by -79.1% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a tangible increase. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

Petroleum Bitumen Production in Australia

In value terms, petroleum bitumen production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of petroleum bitumen increased by 304% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 660%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, petroleum bitumen exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports enjoyed a significant expansion. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Malaysia (X tons) was the main destination for petroleum bitumen exports from Australia, accounting for a 71% share of total exports. Moreover, petroleum bitumen exports to Malaysia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, China (X tons), sevenfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Malaysia amounted to +23.5%.

In value terms, the largest markets for petroleum bitumen exported from Australia were China ($X) and Malaysia ($X).

China, with a CAGR of +136.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review.

Export Prices by Country

The average petroleum bitumen export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 21% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 115% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Malaysia amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Singapore (+39.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Petroleum Bitumen Imports

Imports into Australia

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of petroleum bitumen, when their volume decreased by -82.4% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 799% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then fell notably in the following year.

In value terms, petroleum bitumen imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a measured expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 151% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Singapore (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main suppliers of petroleum bitumen imports to Australia, with a combined 7.1% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of +42.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X), China ($X) and Singapore ($X) appeared to be the largest petroleum bitumen suppliers to Australia, together comprising 60% of total imports.

In terms of the main suppliers, China, with a CAGR of +42.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average petroleum bitumen import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -86.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a significant contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 95% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Singapore ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (-0.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
