Cement Market Size in Australia

In 2022, the Australian cement market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cement exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 63% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Papua New Guinea (X tons) was the main destination for cement exports from Australia, with a 78% share of total exports. Moreover, cement exports to Papua New Guinea exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Vanuatu (X tons), eightfold. New Zealand (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 5.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Papua New Guinea stood at -7.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Vanuatu (+29.7% per year) and New Zealand (+0.5% per year).

In value terms, Papua New Guinea ($X) remains the key foreign market for cement exports from Australia, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vanuatu ($X), with a 6.5% share of total exports. It was followed by New Zealand, with a 6.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Papua New Guinea stood at -7.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Vanuatu (+16.9% per year) and New Zealand (-12.5% per year).

In 2022, the average cement export price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -6.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a mild decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 43% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. In 2022, overseas purchases of cement increased by 14% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, imports continue to indicate measured growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 119%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cement imports rose rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 95%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Thailand (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) were the main suppliers of cement imports to Australia, with a combined 73% share of total imports. Japan, Indonesia, Greece, Singapore and China lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 24%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Singapore (with a CAGR of +86.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for Japan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
