In 2022, the Australian relay market increased by 12% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a perceptible decrease. Relay consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

After five years of growth, overseas shipments of relays decreased by -2.4% to X units in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 54%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X units in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, relay exports expanded notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 50%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

New Zealand (X units), Malaysia (X units) and the United States (X units) were the main destinations of relay exports from Australia, together comprising 41% of total exports. China, the United Arab Emirates, Germany, Papua New Guinea, the UK, Singapore, Indonesia, France, Poland and Hong Kong SAR lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 38%.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average export price increased by 142% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Poland ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, relay imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a noticeable descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
