In 2022, exports of rum from Australia skyrocketed to X litres, jumping by 42% against 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate temperate growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 63% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X litres in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, rum exports surged to $X in 2022. New Zealand (X litres), Papua New Guinea (X litres) and China (X litres) were the main destinations of rum exports from Australia, together accounting for 72% of total exports.

In value terms, New Zealand ($X), Papua New Guinea ($X) and China ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for rum exported from Australia worldwide, together comprising 72% of total exports.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 70% against the previous year. Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to French Polynesia ($X per litre) and Vanuatu ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Singapore ($X per litre) and New Caledonia ($X per litre) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Singapore (+5.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, overseas purchases of rum increased by 6.4% to X litres, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 31%. Imports peaked at X litres in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, rum imports rose notably to $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2022, the United States (X litres) constituted the largest rum supplier to Australia, accounting for a 39% share of total imports. Moreover, rum imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the UK (X litres), threefold. Barbados (X litres) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from the United States stood at -6.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (-8.0% per year) and Barbados (-4.8% per year).
In value terms, the United States ($X) constituted the largest supplier of rum to Australia, comprising 39% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the UK ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Barbados, with a 9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the United States stood at -1.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (-2.0% per year) and Barbados (+2.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average rum import price stood at $X per litre in 2022, with an increase of 4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 68%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Cuba ($X per litre) and Guatemala ($X per litre), while the price for Venezuela ($X per litre) and France ($X per litre) were amongst the lowest.
