Alumina Market Size in Austria

In 2022, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in the Austrian alumina market, when its value increased by 1,238% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a perceptible downturn. Alumina consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Alumina exports from Austria contracted to X tons in 2022, dropping by -4.9% on 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2017 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Sweden ($X per ton) and Spain ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Slovenia ($X per ton) and Bulgaria ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Sweden (+2.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2022, purchases abroad of alumina increased by 5.8% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 77% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, alumina imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +100.8% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 59% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of alumina to Austria, accounting for a 47% share of total imports. Moreover, alumina imports from Bosnia and Herzegovina exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Germany (X tons), with a 19% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Bosnia and Herzegovina stood at +25.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+86.5% per year) and Germany (+2.3% per year).
