Barley Market Size in Austria
The Austrian barley market contracted modestly to $X in 2022, dropping by -2.6% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, barley production contracted slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a mild decline. The exports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, barley exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 82% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
Italy (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons) were the main destinations of barley exports from Austria, with a combined 78% share of total exports. The Czech Republic, Hungary, Switzerland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Bosnia and Herzegovina (with a CAGR of +101.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for barley exported from Austria were Italy ($X), Germany ($X) and Slovakia ($X), with a combined 78% share of total exports. The Czech Republic, Hungary, Switzerland, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.
Among the main countries of destination, Bosnia and Herzegovina, with a CAGR of +97.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average barley export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 22% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average export price increased by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+3.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Austria
In 2022, supplies from abroad of barley decreased by -13% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 32%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, barley imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Hungary (X tons), Slovakia (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) were the main suppliers of barley imports to Austria, with a combined 86% share of total imports. Germany, Italy and France lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 12%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Italy (with a CAGR of +19.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Hungary ($X), Slovakia ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) appeared to be the largest barley suppliers to Austria, with a combined 85% share of total imports. Germany, Italy and France lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 12%.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, barley import price increased by +71.8% against 2020 indices. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+5.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
