Beer Market Size in Austria
The Austrian beer market shrank to $X in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, showed a noticeable decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the market value increased by 5.2% against the previous year. Italy (X tons), Slovenia (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main destinations of beer exports from Austria, together accounting for 59% of total exports. Croatia, France, the United States, Hungary, Switzerland, South Korea, Russia, the Netherlands and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 29%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by France (with a CAGR of +29.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for beer exported from Austria were Italy ($X), Germany ($X) and Slovenia ($X), with a combined 56% share of total exports. These countries were followed by the United States, Croatia, Switzerland, Hungary, the Netherlands, France, South Korea, the UK and Russia, which together accounted for a further 28%.
South Korea, with a CAGR of +20.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average beer export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -1.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 10%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Croatia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+3.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, overseas purchases of beer increased by 16% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 28%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, beer imports amounted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of beer to Austria, accounting for a 62% share of total imports. Moreover, beer imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Czech Republic (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Belgium (X tons), with an 8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Germany amounted to +2.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Czech Republic (-3.6% per year) and Belgium (+21.0% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of beer to Austria, comprising 64% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Belgium, with an 8.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Germany amounted to +2.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Czech Republic (-4.4% per year) and Belgium (+11.5% per year).

The average beer import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -8.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a mild decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the average import price increased by 6.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per ton), while the price for Slovenia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
