In value terms, bleached sulphate pulp exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a perceptible slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 73% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Italy (X tons) was the main destination for bleached sulphate pulp exports from Austria, accounting for a 60% share of total exports. Moreover, bleached sulphate pulp exports to Italy exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Slovenia (X tons), fourfold. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 6.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, bleached sulphate pulp imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a mild curtailment. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The Netherlands (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Sweden (X tons) were the main suppliers of bleached sulphate pulp imports to Austria, together accounting for 64% of total imports. These countries were followed by Uruguay, Slovakia, Finland, Spain, Russia, Portugal, Chile and Brazil, which together accounted for a further 32%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Uruguay (with a CAGR of +57.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest bleached sulphate pulp suppliers to Austria were the Netherlands ($X), Germany ($X) and Sweden ($X), with a combined 66% share of total imports. Uruguay, Finland, Slovakia, Spain, Russia, Portugal, Chile and Brazil lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Slovakia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
