For the third consecutive year, the Austrian buckwheat market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 707% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption showed prominent growth. As a result, consumption attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, shipments abroad of buckwheat decreased by -10.4% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, exports, however, recorded slight growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 386% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, buckwheat exports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a noticeable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 376%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Germany (X tons) was the main destination for buckwheat exports from Austria, accounting for a 63% share of total exports. Moreover, buckwheat exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, France (X tons), sevenfold. Italy (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 7.3% share.
