In 2022, overseas shipments of ceramic tiles decreased by -21.4% to X square meters, falling for the fifth year in a row after three years of growth. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 48%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X square meters in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, ceramic tile exports shrank rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Germany (X square meters), the Czech Republic (X square meters) and Romania (X square meters) were the main destinations of ceramic tile exports from Austria, together comprising 51% of total exports. Bulgaria, Slovakia, Italy, Lithuania, Hungary and Switzerland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 43%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Lithuania (with a CAGR of +28.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, the largest markets for ceramic tile exported from Austria were Germany ($X), Bulgaria ($X) and Italy ($X), together accounting for 48% of total exports. These countries were followed by Romania, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Switzerland, Hungary and Lithuania, which together accounted for a further 47%.
Lithuania, with a CAGR of +30.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
Export Prices by Country
The average ceramic tile export price stood at $X per square meter in 2022, approximately reflecting the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average export price increased by 34% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per square meter, leveling off in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per square meter), while the average price for exports to Lithuania ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Switzerland (+17.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Austria
In 2022, the amount of ceramic tiles imported into Austria declined slightly to X square meters, stabilizing at the previous year's figure. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 20% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X square meters in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, ceramic tile imports contracted slightly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 15%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced slightly in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Italy (X square meters) constituted the largest supplier of ceramic tile to Austria, with a 57% share of total imports. Moreover, ceramic tile imports from Italy exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X square meters), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by the Czech Republic (X square meters), with an 8.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Italy stood at +1.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (-7.5% per year) and the Czech Republic (-1.1% per year).
In value terms, Italy ($X) constituted the largest supplier of ceramic tiles to Austria, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with a 7.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Italy stood at +2.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (-3.9% per year) and Spain (+2.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average ceramic tile import price stood at $X per square meter in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, ceramic tile import price increased by +55.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 55%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per square meter), while the price for the Czech Republic ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+3.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
