In 2022, the Austrian chromium ore and concentrate market decreased by -5.2% to $X, falling for the fourth year in a row after two years of growth. In general, consumption continues to indicate a drastic downturn. Chromium ore and concentrate consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chromium ore and concentrate exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 991% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Slovakia (X tons) was the main destination for chromium ore and concentrate exports from Austria, accounting for a 99% share of total exports. It was followed by Hungary (X tons), with a 1.1% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Slovakia totaled +46.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hungary (-5.2% per year) and Germany (-59.9% per year).

In value terms, Slovakia ($X) remains the key foreign market for chromium ores and concentrates exports from Austria, comprising 97% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Hungary ($X), with a 2.6% share of total exports.

Over the period under review, export price indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, chromium ore and concentrate export price decreased by -1.3% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 86% against the previous year. From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+11.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, overseas purchases of chromium ores and concentrates decreased by -14.8% to X tons, falling for the fourth consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, imports recorded a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 20% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chromium ore and concentrate imports declined slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 68%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, the Netherlands (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of chromium ore and concentrate to Austria, accounting for a 54% share of total imports. Moreover, chromium ore and concentrate imports from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Turkey (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Germany (X tons), with a 21% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the Netherlands stood at +36.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkey (+2.4% per year) and Germany (+9.9% per year).
