Green Coffee Market Size in Austria

In 2022, the Austrian green coffee market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a abrupt contraction. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, shipments abroad of coffee (green) decreased by -20.4% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, exports, however, posted a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 1,027%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, green coffee exports fell dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 713%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Slovakia (X tons), Germany (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) were the main destinations of green coffee exports from Austria, together comprising 90% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Slovakia (with a CAGR of +88.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Slovakia ($X), Germany ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) constituted the largest markets for green coffee exported from Austria worldwide, together comprising 84% of total exports. Sweden, Italy and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 3.9%.

Among the main countries of destination, Sweden, with a CAGR of +91.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average green coffee export price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -8.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, green coffee export price decreased by -32.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 27%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+3.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of coffee (green), when their volume increased by 12% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep downturn. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, green coffee imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a drastic downturn. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Germany (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main suppliers of green coffee imports to Austria, together comprising 65% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Italy (with a CAGR of +130.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), Brazil ($X) and Vietnam ($X) constituted the largest green coffee suppliers to Austria, together accounting for 67% of total imports. Italy, Belgium, Honduras, Indonesia, India and Peru lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 26%.

Italy, with a CAGR of +98.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average green coffee import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw modest growth. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Honduras ($X per ton), while the price for Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+9.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
