In 2021, supplies from abroad of dog and cat food decreased by -3.6% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then declined modestly in the following year.
In value terms, dog and cat food imports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +72.5% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 42% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Germany (X tons), Liechtenstein (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) were the main suppliers of dog and cat food imports to Austria, together accounting for 87% of total imports. These countries were followed by Poland, France, the Czech Republic and Switzerland, which together accounted for a further 11%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by the Czech Republic (with a CAGR of +41.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
