In 2022, imports of ethyl alcohol into Austria reduced dramatically to X litres, with a decrease of -26.5% on the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 64% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X litres. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, ethanol imports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, total imports indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 61%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Hungary (X litres) constituted the largest supplier of ethanol to Austria, with a 41% share of total imports. Moreover, ethanol imports from Hungary exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X litres), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Slovakia (X litres), with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Hungary amounted to +2.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+2.6% per year) and Slovakia (+32.6% per year).
In value terms, Hungary ($X), Germany ($X) and Slovakia ($X) appeared to be the largest ethanol suppliers to Austria, together comprising 76% of total imports. These countries were followed by France, the Czech Republic and Poland, which together accounted for a further 21%.
Poland, with a CAGR of +57.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average ethanol import price stood at $X per litre in 2022, jumping by 23% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, ethanol import price increased by +84.8% against 2016 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Germany ($X per litre) and Poland ($X per litre), while the price for the Czech Republic ($X per litre) and Slovakia ($X per litre) were amongst the lowest.
