The Austrian glucose market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Glucose consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of glucose and glucose syrup decreased by -6.5% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after four years of growth. In general, total exports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -28.3% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, glucose exports expanded slightly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Germany (X tons) was the main destination for glucose exports from Austria, with a 51% share of total exports. Moreover, glucose exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Italy (X tons), threefold. Slovakia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Germany amounted to -3.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (+41.5% per year) and Slovakia (+88.7% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for glucose and glucose syrup exports from Austria, comprising 54% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Italy ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Slovakia, with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Germany stood at -9.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (+18.4% per year) and Slovakia (+78.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average glucose export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 9.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt curtailment. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Slovakia (-5.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Austria
In 2021, supplies from abroad of glucose and glucose syrup increased by 1.8% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 46%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, glucose imports rose significantly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 19%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Belgium (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and France (X tons) were the main suppliers of glucose imports to Austria, with a combined 74% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Bulgaria, Germany and Italy, which together accounted for a further 25%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Bulgaria (with a CAGR of +96.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Hungary ($X), Belgium ($X) and France ($X) constituted the largest glucose suppliers to Austria, with a combined 61% share of total imports. Germany, Italy and Bulgaria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 28%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Bulgaria, with a CAGR of +80.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average glucose import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 11% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a mild reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 13%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+5.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
