The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 93%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Germany (X units), the Netherlands (X units) and Spain (X units) were the main destinations of tobacco making machinery exports from Austria, together accounting for 69% of total exports. France, Switzerland, Romania, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 27%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Switzerland (with a CAGR of +44.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Italy ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

Over the period under review, imports, however, showed resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 76% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2021, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, tobacco making machinery imports shrank sharply to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 94%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X units) constituted the largest tobacco making machinery supplier to Austria, with a 84% share of total imports. Moreover, tobacco making machinery imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X units), eightfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to +5.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+20.3% per year) and Poland (+96.8% per year).

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per unit), while the price for China ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
