Papaya Market Size in Austria

The Austrian papaya market declined modestly to $X in 2022, reducing by -4.5% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate strong growth. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

Papaya exports from Austria declined significantly to X tons in 2022, dropping by -30.5% against the previous year. In general, exports, however, showed a remarkable increase. Italy (X tons) was the main destination for papaya exports from Austria, accounting for a 56% share of total exports. Moreover, papaya exports to Italy exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X tons), twofold. Hungary (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 12% share.

In value terms, Italy ($X), Germany ($X) and Hungary ($X) were the largest markets for papaya exported from Austria worldwide, together accounting for 92% of total exports. The Czech Republic, Slovakia and Slovenia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 5.6%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, the Czech Republic, with a CAGR of +47.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average papaya export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -2.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 20%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Slovenia (+4.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, overseas purchases of papayas were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports saw strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 44%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, papaya imports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 36% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

In 2022, Germany (X tons) was the main papaya supplier to Austria, accounting for a 91% share of total imports. Moreover, papaya imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Netherlands (X tons), more than tenfold.
