In 2021, the Austrian cows skin market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2013, thus ending a seven-year declining trend. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cows skin exports totaled $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 52% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Germany (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main destinations of cows skin exports from Austria, with a combined 73% share of total exports. These countries were followed by the Czech Republic, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, the Netherlands and Spain, which together accounted for a further 25%.

Over the period under review, imports showed tangible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cows skin imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 83% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Italy (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of cows skin to Austria, accounting for a 88% share of total imports. Moreover, cows skin imports from Italy exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Slovakia (X tons), with a 1.8% share.
