Soft Drink Market Size in Austria

In 2021, the Austrian soft drink market decreased by -96.2% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, consumption showed a precipitous curtailment. Soft drink consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

For the eighth year in a row, Austria recorded growth in overseas shipments of soft drinks, which increased by 6.7% to X litres in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 77%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, soft drink exports expanded modestly to $X in 2021. Overall, total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +89.0% against 2014 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 24%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Germany (X litres), the United States (X litres) and Hungary (X litres) were the main destinations of soft drink exports from Austria, together comprising 44% of total exports. Brazil, Italy, Turkey, the Netherlands, Australia, Switzerland, Spain, Poland, the Czech Republic and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 29%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +41.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average soft drink export price amounted to $X per litre, shrinking by -2.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 19% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per litre. From 2014 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Hungary ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Belgium (+2.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of soft drinks, when their volume decreased by -14.3% to X litres. In general, imports, however, posted a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 236%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X litres, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, soft drink imports shrank to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 159% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

In 2021, Switzerland (X litres) constituted the largest soft drink supplier to Austria, accounting for a 63% share of total imports. Moreover, soft drink imports from Switzerland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X litres), threefold. Hungary (X litres) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 2.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Switzerland stood at +44.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+5.4% per year) and Hungary (+11.5% per year).

In value terms, Switzerland ($X) constituted the largest supplier of soft drink to Austria, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 4% share.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 36%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per litre in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per litre), while the price for Croatia ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
