Sweet Potato Market Size in Austria

The Austrian sweet potato market soared to $X in 2021, jumping by 26% against the previous year. Slovenia (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main destinations of sweet potato exports from Austria, together accounting for 76% of total exports. Italy, Switzerland, Slovakia and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 22%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Italy (with a CAGR of +206.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the average export price increased by 17%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Switzerland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Slovakia (+0.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

For the tenth year in a row, Austria recorded growth in supplies from abroad of sweet potatoes, which increased by 11% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports showed a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 70% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, sweet potato imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 91%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Spain (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of sweet potato to Austria, accounting for a 48% share of total imports. Moreover, sweet potato imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), twofold. The Netherlands (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 19% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Spain stood at +87.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+65.7% per year) and the Netherlands (+82.2% per year).
