For the third consecutive year, the Austrian tin bar market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 25% to $X in 2022. Overall, the total consumption indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +78.0% against 2019 indices. Tin bar consumption peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, the amount of tin bars, rods, profiles and wires exported from Austria reduced remarkably to X tons, waning by -32.9% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, exports showed a precipitous decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 21%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, tin bar exports shrank dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, exports faced a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 47%. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Slovenia (X tons) was the main destination for tin bar exports from Austria, accounting for a 49% share of total exports. Moreover, tin bar exports to Slovenia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Romania (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by China (X tons), with a 6.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Slovenia totaled +48.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Romania (-13.2% per year) and China (+16.5% per year).

In value terms, Slovenia ($X) remains the key foreign market for tin bars, rods, profiles and wires exports from Austria, comprising 48% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Romania ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with a 6.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Slovenia totaled +55.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Romania (-7.4% per year) and the Czech Republic (-7.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average tin bar export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 21% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, tin bar export price increased by +61.5% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the average export price increased by 43% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Croatia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Croatia (+10.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Austria

For the third year in a row, Austria recorded growth in supplies from abroad of tin bars, rods, profiles and wires, which increased by 26% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a mild shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 59% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, tin bar imports rose notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Germany (X tons) was the main supplier of tin bar to Austria, accounting for a 95% share of total imports. Moreover, tin bar imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Czech Republic (X tons), more than tenfold. Italy (X kg) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 0.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Germany stood at +11.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Czech Republic (+74.7% per year) and Italy (-43.6% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of tin bars, rods, profiles and wires to Austria, comprising 94% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 5.8% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 0.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Germany totaled +8.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Czech Republic (+73.4% per year) and Italy (-42.5% per year).

The average tin bar import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -12% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a pronounced downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 33% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+6.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
