Canned Food Market Size in Azerbaijan
The Azerbaijani canned food market totaled $X in 2021, almost unchanged from the previous year. In general, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of canned food, when their volume increased by 7.4% to X tons. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 39%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, canned food exports amounted to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, faced a sharp shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 41%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Georgia (X tons) was the main destination for canned food exports from Azerbaijan, with a 58% share of total exports. Moreover, canned food exports to Georgia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Russia (X tons), twofold. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Georgia stood at +9.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Russia (+8.5% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+11.3% per year).
In value terms, Georgia ($X) remains the key foreign market for canned food exports from Azerbaijan, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Russia ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 6.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Georgia amounted to +5.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Russia (+10.6% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+15.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average canned food export price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -2.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price faced a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 21%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Canada ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Canada (+9.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Azerbaijan
For the fifth year in a row, Azerbaijan recorded growth in purchases abroad of canned food, which increased by 14% to X tons in 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 15% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, canned food imports rose notably to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 21% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Russia (X tons), Turkey (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) were the main suppliers of canned food imports to Azerbaijan, together accounting for 75% of total imports. These countries were followed by Ukraine, Spain, Moldova, Belarus, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Thailand, Iran and Germany, which together accounted for a further 20%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Moldova (with a CAGR of +67.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Russia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of canned food to Azerbaijan, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 5.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Russia totaled +8.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkey (+13.6% per year) and the Netherlands (-6.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average canned food import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -1.6% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.3%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the average import price increased by 35% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Moldova ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+23.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
