In 2021, after nine years of growth, there was decline in the Azerbaijani cider, perry and mead market, when its value decreased by -0.5% to $X. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a significant expansion. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2020, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

In value terms, cider, perry and mead production declined to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a moderate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 20%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then fell in the following year.

After five years of growth, shipments abroad of cider, perry, mead and other fermented beverages decreased by -2.6% to X litres in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 120% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X litres in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, cider, perry and mead exports totaled $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 165% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Belarus (X litres), Russia (X litres) and Ukraine (X litres) were the main destinations of cider, perry and mead exports from Azerbaijan, together accounting for 79% of total exports. These countries were followed by Germany, China, Benin and Kyrgyzstan, which together accounted for a further 15%.

From 2016 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Germany (with a CAGR of +241.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for cider, perry and mead exported from Azerbaijan were Belarus ($X), Russia ($X) and Ukraine ($X), with a combined 80% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Germany, China, Kyrgyzstan and Benin, which together accounted for a further 13%.

Germany, with a CAGR of +305.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average cider, perry and mead export price stood at $X per litre in 2021, surging by 9.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a resilient expansion from 2016 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +14.4% over the last five years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, cider, perry and mead export price increased by +95.6% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 33%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Benin ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2016 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+18.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Azerbaijan

In 2021, approx. X litres of cider, perry, mead and other fermented beverages were imported into Azerbaijan; increasing by 143% against the previous year. Overall, imports saw a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 530% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X litres in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cider, perry and mead imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 3,186% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Lithuania (X litres), Turkey (X litres) and the UK (X litres) were the main suppliers of cider, perry and mead imports to Azerbaijan, with a combined 80% share of total imports. Ireland, Italy, Germany and Japan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Germany (with a CAGR of +68.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest cider, perry and mead suppliers to Azerbaijan were Turkey ($X), Lithuania ($X) and the UK ($X), with a combined 73% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Japan, Ireland, Italy and Germany, which together accounted for a further 26%.

Over the period under review, the import price showed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average import price increased by 422% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per litre in 2014; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per litre), while the price for the UK ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+24.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
