The Azerbaijani cigars and cigarillos market shrank to $X in 2022, waning by -5% against the previous year. Overall, consumption showed a perceptible downturn. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Imports into Azerbaijan

In 2022, approx. X tons of cigars, cheroots and cigarillos were imported into Azerbaijan; rising by 32% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports recorded moderate growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 132% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, cigars and cigarillos imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 186%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Germany (X kg), Cuba (X kg) and Italy (X kg) were the main suppliers of cigars and cigarillos imports to Azerbaijan, together accounting for 92% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Cuba (with a CAGR of +85.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Cuba ($X) constituted the largest supplier of cigars, cheroots and cigarillos to Azerbaijan, comprising 75% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 6.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Cuba totaled +105.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (-5.1% per year) and Italy (+27.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average cigars and cigarillos import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +8.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cigars and cigarillos import price decreased by -19.0% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average import price increased by 54%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cuba ($X per ton), while the price for Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cuba (+9.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
