Paddy Rice Market Size in Azerbaijan

The Azerbaijani paddy rice market shrank modestly to $X in 2022, which is down by -1.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed mild growth. Paddy rice consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, paddy rice production expanded sharply to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, posted a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 272% against the previous year. Paddy rice production peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The average yield of paddy rice in Azerbaijan declined slightly to X tons per ha in 2022, waning by -2.5% on 2021 figures. In general, the yield indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, paddy rice yield increased by +16.4% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the yield increased by 45%. The paddy rice yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then declined in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of paddy rice production in Azerbaijan reduced modestly to X ha, leveling off at the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the harvested area increased by 110% against the previous year. The paddy rice harvested area peaked at X ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Azerbaijan

Paddy rice exports from Azerbaijan skyrocketed to X tons in 2022, rising by 73% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports showed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 68,460% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, paddy rice exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 61,270%. The exports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Russia (X tons) was the main destination for paddy rice exports from Azerbaijan, with a 75% share of total exports. Moreover, paddy rice exports to Russia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Kazakhstan (X tons), threefold.

From 2013 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Russia amounted to +108.0%.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the key foreign market for paddy rice exports from Azerbaijan, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 31% share of total exports.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average paddy rice export price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -7.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 49% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Russia amounted to $X per ton.

From 2013 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Kazakhstan (+13.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Azerbaijan

Paddy rice imports into Azerbaijan declined slightly to X tons in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against 2021 figures. In general, imports saw a precipitous contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 817%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, paddy rice imports shrank markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a dramatic slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 668% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Turkey (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of paddy rice to Azerbaijan, accounting for a 83% share of total imports. Moreover, paddy rice imports from Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Iran (X tons), ninefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Germany (X tons), with a 4.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Turkey stood at -3.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Iran (-9.7% per year) and Germany (+2.5% per year).

In value terms, Turkey ($X) constituted the largest supplier of paddy rice to Azerbaijan, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Iran, with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Turkey totaled -3.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+5.3% per year) and Iran (-16.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average paddy rice import price amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -39.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 128% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined markedly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+20.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
