Salt Market Size in Azerbaijan
The Azerbaijani salt market fell notably to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -95.7% against the previous year. In general, consumption faced a significant decrease. Salt consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.
Salt Production in Azerbaijan
In value terms, salt production dropped modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a slight contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Azerbaijan
In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of salt and pure sodium chloride, when their volume increased by 25% to X tons. In general, exports enjoyed significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 404% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, salt exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 175% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
Russia (X tons) was the main destination for salt exports from Azerbaijan, with a 71% share of total exports. Moreover, salt exports to Russia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Georgia (X tons), threefold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Russia amounted to +120.6%.
In value terms, Russia ($X) and Georgia ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for salt exported from Azerbaijan worldwide.
Russia, with a CAGR of +108.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average salt export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 18% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 37%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Georgia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Russia amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Georgia (+2.6%).

Imports into Azerbaijan
In 2022, overseas purchases of salt and pure sodium chloride decreased by -14% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, imports showed a noticeable decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 55% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, salt imports contracted markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Iran (X tons) constituted the largest salt supplier to Azerbaijan, with a 72% share of total imports. Moreover, salt imports from Iran exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Russia (X tons), sixfold. Ukraine (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Iran amounted to +79.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Russia (-2.7% per year) and Ukraine (-26.1% per year).
In value terms, Iran ($X) constituted the largest supplier of salt and pure sodium chloride to Azerbaijan, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Russia ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Belarus, with an 8.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Iran stood at +82.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Russia (-1.8% per year) and Belarus (+8.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average salt import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -5.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the price for Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+3.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
