Sparkling Wine Market Size in Azerbaijan

In 2022, the Azerbaijani sparkling wine market increased by 0.9% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after eight years of decline. Overall, consumption saw a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the market value increased by 1% against the previous year. Sparkling wine consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

For the third consecutive year, Azerbaijan recorded growth in shipments abroad of sparkling wine, which increased by 50% to X litres in 2022. Overall, exports saw resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 20,107%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X litres in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sparkling wine exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports enjoyed buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 24,116%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Belarus (X litres) was the main destination for sparkling wine exports from Azerbaijan, accounting for a 68% share of total exports. Moreover, sparkling wine exports to Belarus exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, China (X litres), fivefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Belarus was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China (+27.8% per year) and Japan (+155.0% per year).

In value terms, Belarus ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for sparkling wine exports from Azerbaijan, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($X), with an 11% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Belarus was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Japan (+134.5% per year) and China (+40.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average sparkling wine export price stood at $X per litre in 2022, with an increase of 95% against the previous year. Overall, the export price posted resilient growth. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to China ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Russia (+15.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Azerbaijan

Sparkling wine imports into Azerbaijan soared to X litres in 2022, jumping by 91% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, imports recorded a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 143%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, sparkling wine imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports posted a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 196% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Italy (X litres), Russia (X litres) and Georgia (X litres) were the main suppliers of sparkling wine imports to Azerbaijan, with a combined 84% share of total imports.
