Sugar Beet Market Size in Azerbaijan

The Azerbaijani sugar beet market stood at $X in 2022, growing by 7.4% against the previous year. Based on 2022 figures, sugar beet harvested area decreased by -42.5% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to sugar beet production reached the maximum at X ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Imports into Azerbaijan

For the third year in a row, Azerbaijan recorded decline in purchases abroad of sugar beet, which decreased by 0% to X kg in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 183% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X kg in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sugar beet imports stood at $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 626% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, Iran (X kg) constituted the largest sugar beet supplier to Azerbaijan, with a 85% share of total imports. Moreover, sugar beet imports from Iran exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the UK (X kg), sixfold.

From 2016 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Iran was relatively modest.

In value terms, the UK ($X) constituted the largest supplier of sugar beet to Azerbaijan, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Iran ($X), with a 32% share of total imports.

In 2022, the average sugar beet import price amounted to $X per ton, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Overall, the import price posted a perceptible expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 299% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for Iran stood at $X per ton.

From 2016 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+9.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
