For the third consecutive year, Bahrain recorded decline in shipments abroad of cartons, boxes and cases of corrugated paper or paperboard, which decreased by -63.7% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a precipitous contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, corrugated paper box exports fell markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a dramatic shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 18%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Saudi Arabia (X tons), Jordan (X tons) and Yemen (X tons) were the main destinations of corrugated paper box exports from Bahrain, together accounting for 82% of total exports. France, Oman, Free Zones, Hong Kong SAR and Kuwait lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by France (with a CAGR of +165.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for cartons, boxes and cases of corrugated paper or paperboard exports from Bahrain, comprising 36% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Jordan ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Saudi Arabia stood at -29.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Jordan (-31.2% per year) and France (+187.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average corrugated paper box export price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -34.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 234%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Yemen ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Saudi Arabia (+10.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Bahrain

In 2022, overseas purchases of cartons, boxes and cases of corrugated paper or paperboard increased by 24% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after four years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a deep slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 71%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, corrugated paper box imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 59%. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Saudi Arabia (X tons) constituted the largest corrugated paper box supplier to Bahrain, accounting for a 61% share of total imports. Moreover, corrugated paper box imports from Saudi Arabia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by China (X tons), with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Saudi Arabia stood at -17.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-9.0% per year) and China (+2.1% per year).

The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Saudi Arabia totaled -10.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-6.8% per year) and China (-6.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average corrugated paper box import price amounted to $X per ton, flattening at the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 75%. The import price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the price for Free Zones ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
