The exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, coconut oil exports dropped significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports faced a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 687%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Saudi Arabia (X kg) was the main destination for coconut oil exports from Bahrain, with a 10% share of total exports. Moreover, coconut oil exports to Saudi Arabia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Oman (X kg), sevenfold.

From 2013 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Saudi Arabia totaled -6.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Oman (-59.2% per year) and Niger (0.0% per year).

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for coconut (copra) oil exports from Bahrain, comprising 38% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Oman ($X), with a 4.6% share of total exports.

From 2013 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Saudi Arabia totaled -10.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Oman (-60.5% per year) and Niger (0.0% per year).

The average coconut oil export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -15.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Niger ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United Arab Emirates (-0.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Bahrain

In 2022, purchases abroad of coconut (copra) oil was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Overall, imports saw resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

In value terms, coconut oil imports reached $X in 2022. In general, imports posted a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 42%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Malaysia (X tons), India (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) were the main suppliers of coconut oil imports to Bahrain, together comprising 85% of total imports. Indonesia, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, the United States and Singapore lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 15%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the United States (with a CAGR of +70.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest coconut oil suppliers to Bahrain were Malaysia ($X), India ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a combined 85% share of total imports.

The United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +64.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average coconut oil import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 2.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average import price increased by 41%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while the price for Singapore ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+10.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
