Coffee Substitutes Market Size in Bahrain

For the fourth consecutive year, the Bahraini coffee substitutes market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 8.9% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Coffee substitutes consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Bahrain

In 2022, approx. X tons of coffee substitutes containing coffee were exported from Bahrain; picking up by 67% compared with the year before. Overall, exports posted a mild expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 728% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, coffee substitutes exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 708%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Saudi Arabia (X tons) was the main destination for coffee substitutes exports from Bahrain, with a 68% share of total exports. Moreover, coffee substitutes exports to Saudi Arabia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Qatar (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Oman (X kg), with a 3.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Saudi Arabia amounted to +16.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Qatar (-1.0% per year) and Oman (-7.3% per year).

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) remains the key foreign market for coffee substitutes containing coffee exports from Bahrain, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Qatar ($X), with a 4.6% share of total exports. It was followed by Oman, with a 4.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Saudi Arabia stood at +22.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Qatar (-8.6% per year) and Oman (+0.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average coffee substitutes export price amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -27.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the average export price increased by 45%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell significantly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Oman ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Qatar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United Arab Emirates (+11.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Bahrain

In 2022, supplies from abroad of coffee substitutes containing coffee increased by 7.9% to X tons, rising for the fourth year in a row after three years of decline. Overall, imports, however, showed a pronounced decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 84% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, coffee substitutes imports rose remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed slight growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Kuwait (X tons), the United States (X tons) and the UK (X tons) were the main suppliers of coffee substitutes imports to Bahrain, together comprising 57% of total imports. China, Syrian Arab Republic, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, India, Brazil, Ethiopia, Jordan and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Yemen (with a CAGR of +70.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the UK ($X), the United States ($X) and Kuwait ($X) were the largest coffee substitutes suppliers to Bahrain, with a combined 76% share of total imports. Saudi Arabia, Syrian Arab Republic, China, India, Yemen, Brazil, Ethiopia, Jordan and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 12%.

Yemen, with a CAGR of +57.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average coffee substitutes import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 5.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, coffee substitutes import price increased by +118.2% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for Yemen ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ethiopia (+19.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
