Leek Market Size in Bahrain

In 2022, the Bahraini leek market increased by 2% to $X, rising for the third consecutive year after three years of decline. In general, the total consumption indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +27.0% against 2019 indices. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Bahrain

In 2022, the amount of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables exported from Bahrain skyrocketed to X tons, increasing by 24% on the previous year. Overall, exports enjoyed a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 147%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, leek exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 164%. The exports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The United States (X tons) was the main destination for leek exports from Bahrain, accounting for a 93% share of total exports. Moreover, leek exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Free Zones (X kg), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to the United States amounted to +24.7%.

In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the key foreign market for leeks and other alliaceous vegetables exports from Bahrain, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Free Zones ($X), with a 4.4% share of total exports.

In 2022, the average leek export price amounted to $X per ton, almost unchanged from the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 159%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Free Zones totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Saudi Arabia (+94.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Bahrain

In 2022, purchases abroad of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables increased by 7.9% to X tons, rising for the fourth consecutive year after three years of decline. In general, total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +36.0% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 70% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, leek imports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +27.8% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 66% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the Netherlands (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of leek to Bahrain, accounting for a 88% share of total imports. Moreover, leek imports from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Sri Lanka (X tons), more than tenfold. Spain (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 2.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from the Netherlands amounted to +9.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Sri Lanka (-3.9% per year) and Spain (+45.3% per year).

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest supplier of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables to Bahrain, comprising 88% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 3.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with a 2.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from the Netherlands totaled +5.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (+10.8% per year) and Spain (+36.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average leek import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -8.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a mild descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while the price for Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Oman (+8.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
