Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, lettuce and chicory exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 281%. The exports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The United States (X tons) was the main destination for lettuce and chicory exports from Bahrain, accounting for a 68% share of total exports. Moreover, lettuce and chicory exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Saudi Arabia (X tons), threefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to the United States amounted to +82.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Saudi Arabia (+8.1% per year) and Free Zones (+1.8% per year).

Imports into Bahrain

Lettuce and chicory imports into Bahrain contracted to X tons in 2022, declining by -7% on the year before. In general, total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +3.4% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 169%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Over the period under review, total imports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 68% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Jordan (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons) were the main suppliers of lettuce and chicory imports to Bahrain, with a combined 86% share of total imports. Spain, Oman and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 12%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Spain (with a CAGR of +28.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Jordan ($X), Egypt ($X) and Spain ($X) appeared to be the largest lettuce and chicory suppliers to Bahrain, together accounting for 73% of total imports.
