Manuka Market Size in Bahrain

In 2022, the Bahraini manuka market decreased by -26.7% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a remarkable increase. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2021, and then fell notably in the following year.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of manuka, when their volume decreased by -10.5% to X tons. Overall, exports, however, saw a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 17,926%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, manuka exports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 10,561% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates (X tons) was the main destination for manuka exports from Bahrain, accounting for a 46% share of total exports. Moreover, manuka exports to the United Arab Emirates exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United States (X tons), twofold. Yemen (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 19% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to the United Arab Emirates stood at +79.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (+49.4% per year) and Yemen (+83.3% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for manuka exported from Bahrain were the United States ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Kuwait ($X), with a combined 87% share of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, the United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +85.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average manuka export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 7.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the average export price increased by 124% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kuwait ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United Arab Emirates (+3.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Manuka Imports

Imports into Bahrain

In 2022, the amount of manuka imported into Bahrain plummeted to X tons, falling by -22.4% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, manuka imports reduced sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 47%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

Imports by Country

Australia (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main suppliers of manuka imports to Bahrain, with a combined 46% share of total imports. India, the United Arab Emirates, Iran, Greece, Switzerland, Germany, Turkey, Egypt, Yemen and France lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 44%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Yemen (with a CAGR of +44.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of manuka to Bahrain, comprising 23% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Australia ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Switzerland, with a 7.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Saudi Arabia totaled +5.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Australia (+5.5% per year) and Switzerland (-0.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average manuka import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -5.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average import price increased by 11%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Greece (+14.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
