In 2022, the Bahraini market for meat of camels and other animals decreased by -11.1% to $X, falling for the fourth year in a row after four years of growth. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a pronounced downturn. Camel and other animal meat consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 821%. The exports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Oman (X kg) was the main destination for camel and other animal meat exports from Bahrain, with a approx. 100% share of total exports.

From 2013 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Oman stood at +205.5%.

In value terms, Oman ($X) also remains the key foreign market for meat of camels and other animals exports from Bahrain.

The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Oman.

Camel and other animal meat imports into Bahrain fell significantly to X tons in 2022, reducing by -26.5% compared with 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 58% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, camel and other animal meat imports contracted notably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 110% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Saudi Arabia (X tons) constituted the largest camel and other animal meat supplier to Bahrain, accounting for a 61% share of total imports. Moreover, camel and other animal meat imports from Saudi Arabia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Egypt (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Saudi Arabia stood at +28.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Egypt (+27.1% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-10.6% per year).

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of meat of camels and other animals to Bahrain, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by the UK, with an 8.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Saudi Arabia stood at +28.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-8.1% per year) and the UK (+11.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average import price for meat of camels and other animals stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 2.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a slight curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 33%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+21.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
