Market Size for Nutmeg, Mace And Cardamoms in Bahrain

In 2022, the Bahraini nutmeg, mace and cardamom market decreased by -33.4% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after four years of growth. Overall, consumption, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of nutmeg, mace and cardamoms, when their volume decreased by -13.4% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 691% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, nutmeg, mace and cardamom exports fell significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 835%. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Saudi Arabia (X tons) was the main destination for nutmeg, mace and cardamom exports from Bahrain, with a 52% share of total exports. Moreover, nutmeg, mace and cardamom exports to Saudi Arabia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United States (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Kuwait (X tons), with a 19% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Saudi Arabia totaled +17.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (+156.7% per year) and Kuwait (+62.4% per year).

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) remains the key foreign market for nutmeg, mace and cardamoms exports from Bahrain, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kuwait ($X), with a 23% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 9.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Saudi Arabia totaled +36.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kuwait (+70.5% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+69.1% per year).

The average nutmeg, mace and cardamom export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -3.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, posted buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 46%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the United States ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Saudi Arabia (+16.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Bahrain

After three years of growth, overseas purchases of nutmeg, mace and cardamoms decreased by -14.9% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, nutmeg, mace and cardamom imports fell rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 78% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Guatemala (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of nutmeg, mace and cardamom to Bahrain, accounting for a 58% share of total imports. Moreover, nutmeg, mace and cardamom imports from Guatemala exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Tanzania (X tons), with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Guatemala totaled +4.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+1.7% per year) and Tanzania (+37.0% per year).

In value terms, Guatemala ($X) constituted the largest supplier of nutmeg, mace and cardamoms to Bahrain, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 4.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Guatemala amounted to +7.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+10.4% per year) and Tanzania (+40.3% per year).

In 2022, the average nutmeg, mace and cardamom import price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -28.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, enjoyed pronounced growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the average import price increased by 55%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the price for Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+8.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
