Orange Market Size in Bahrain

In 2022, the Bahraini orange market increased by 1% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, the amount of oranges exported from Bahrain surged to X tons, picking up by 20% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a pronounced decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 86%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, orange exports expanded notably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw measured growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 66%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Saudi Arabia (X tons) was the main destination for orange exports from Bahrain, accounting for a 87% share of total exports. Moreover, orange exports to Saudi Arabia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Kuwait (X tons), more than tenfold. Oman (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 2.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Saudi Arabia amounted to -3.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kuwait (+15.4% per year) and Oman (+17.8% per year).

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) remains the key foreign market for oranges exports from Bahrain, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 1.1% share of total exports. It was followed by Kuwait, with a 0.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Saudi Arabia stood at +4.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-2.8% per year) and Kuwait (+9.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average orange export price amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -9.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the average export price increased by 53% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Kuwait ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Saudi Arabia (+8.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Bahrain

In 2022, the amount of oranges imported into Bahrain shrank to X tons, dropping by -6.1% compared with the year before. Overall, imports recorded a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, orange imports rose sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 30%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Egypt (X tons) constituted the largest orange supplier to Bahrain, accounting for a 59% share of total imports. Moreover, orange imports from Egypt exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Africa (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Syrian Arab Republic (X tons), with a 5.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Egypt amounted to +3.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (-1.7% per year) and Syrian Arab Republic (+17.1% per year).

In value terms, Egypt ($X), South Africa ($X) and Spain ($X) constituted the largest orange suppliers to Bahrain, together comprising 94% of total imports. Syrian Arab Republic, Australia and Lebanon lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 2.9%.

Syrian Arab Republic, with a CAGR of +12.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average orange import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 13% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the average import price increased by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while the price for Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
