Pineapple Market Size in Bahrain

In 2022, the Bahraini pineapple market increased by 23% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2017; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Exports from Bahrain

In 2022, shipments abroad of pineapples was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, saw a deep downturn. The exports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, pineapple exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a mild slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 193%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

The United States (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Free Zones (X kg) were the main destinations of pineapple exports from Bahrain, together accounting for 99% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the United States (with a CAGR of +78.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the key foreign market for pineapples exports from Bahrain, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 20% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the United States amounted to +54.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Saudi Arabia (-13.1% per year) and Free Zones (-28.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average pineapple export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 2.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average export price increased by 194%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Free Zones ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Free Zones (+7.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Bahrain

In 2022, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of pineapples, when their volume increased by 17% to X tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 26%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pineapple imports soared to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the Philippines (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of pineapple to Bahrain, accounting for a 76% share of total imports. Moreover, pineapple imports from the Philippines exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tons), tenfold. Kenya (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 6.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from the Philippines amounted to +4.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (-8.3% per year) and Kenya (+60.9% per year).

In value terms, the Philippines ($X) constituted the largest supplier of pineapples to Bahrain, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by India, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the Philippines totaled +8.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Thailand (+44.1% per year) and India (-7.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average pineapple import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 7.2% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while the price for Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
