Pork Market Size in Bahrain

The Bahraini pork market skyrocketed to $X in 2022, increasing by 17% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Pork consumption peaked at $X in 2017; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Pork Exports

Exports from Bahrain

In 2022, the amount of pork exported from Bahrain soared to X tons, with an increase of 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a deep downturn. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, pork exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 82% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates (X tons) was the main destination for pork exports from Bahrain, accounting for a 61% share of total exports. Moreover, pork exports to the United Arab Emirates exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Vanuatu (X tons), eightfold. The United States (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the United Arab Emirates stood at +53.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Vanuatu (-14.0% per year) and the United States (-14.5% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the key foreign market for pork exports from Bahrain, comprising 41% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Kuwait, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to the United States stood at +14.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+36.1% per year) and Kuwait (+49.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average pork export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -8.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, posted a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 46%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+34.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Bahrain

In 2022, purchases abroad of pork increased by 13% to X tons, rising for the fourth consecutive year after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 14%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, pork imports soared to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the Netherlands (X tons) was the main supplier of pork to Bahrain, with a 96% share of total imports. It was followed by Kenya (X tons), with a 2.5% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the Netherlands totaled +6.1%.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest supplier of pork to Bahrain, comprising 97% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kenya ($X), with a 2.4% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from the Netherlands amounted to +5.3%.

The average pork import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 5.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 15%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Kenya totaled $X per ton.
